The insulin family of proteins groups a number of active peptides which are evolutionaryrelated including insulin; relaxin; insulin-like growth factors I and II ; mammalianLeydig cell-specific insulin-like peptide (gene INSL3) and early placenta insulin-likepeptide (ELIP) (gene INSL4) ; insect prothoracicotropic hormone (bombyxin) ;locust insulin-related peptide (LIRP) ; molluscan insulin-related peptides 1 to 5 (MIP); and Caenorhabditis elegans insulin-like peptides . Structurally.ll these peptidesconsist of two polypeptide chains (A and B) linked by two disulphide bonds. They all share a conservedarrangement of four cysteines in their A chain. The first of these cysteines is linked by a disulphidebond to the third one and the second and fourth cysteines are linked by interchain disulphide bonds tocysteines in the B chain. Insulin is involved in the regulation of normal glucose homeostasis.s wellas other specific physiological functions . It is synthesised as aprepropeptide from which an endoplasmic reticulum-targeting sequence is cleaved to yield proinsulin.Prosinsulin contains regions A and B separated by an intervening connecting region..
